Our School - School Profile

Our School

South Yarra Primary School is one of the oldest continuously operating Primary Schools in Victoria, established in 1854, and one of only a few schools with the City of Melbourne.  The school is five kilometres from the Melbourne CBD and has the advantage of opening onto Fawkner Park, known as "The School on the Park."

The school has been providing education for over 160 years.  In 2018, we have 420 students enrolled from a DET designated neighbourhood boundary enrolment area.  We are proud of our diversity and are sensitive to the varying family, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds of all of our students.

Our teaching and learning environments have been renovated to optimise classroom conditions.  All classrooms have digital technologies, air-conditioning and access to wireless technology.

The addition of a three storey modular facility has created flexible learning spaces and provides more space for all the students to grow and learn.

The school has a distinctive ethos, which is supportive, friendly and caring. Participation and cooperation amongst all members of the school community is actively encouraged and valued. All members of the school community have the opportunity to be part of the decision-making process. Efficient and effective open communication is a priority between all members of the school community.

As a community we are committed to fostering a love of teaching and learning and extending students to their individual potential. We offer students a broad, challenging curriculum in accordance with the Victorian Curriculum. The school has a reputation for high standards in Literacy and Numeracy; our outcomes are consistently well above the State mean.

The school places particular emphasis on developing high quality Literacy and Numeracy skills. The school addresses the needs of individual children through programs such as Physical Education, LOTE, Visual Arts and Performing Arts.  An extensive wireless based ICT digital program is accessed by all children.

All children have the opportunity to participate in educational excursions; an intensive swimming program and students in Years 3-6 participate in inter-school sports and camping programs.  A Snow Sports program operates in Year 5/6 at Mt Buller as a co-curricular option.

An Out Of School Hours Care program and a Vacation Care program are provided by School Council and operated by Camp Australia to support working parents from 7.30am to 8.45am and from 3.30pm to 6.00pm.  Vacation Care is also provided. Parents are required to register directly with the provider.

The staff work collaboratively, are well qualified, enthusiastic and have a wide range of skills and experience. The school places a strong emphasis on professional learning for staff, providing opportunities for teachers to expand leadership, professional knowledge and continuously add to their learning journey.

The school focuses on providing all children with a safe and positive learning environment.  A whole school approach to Student Welfare has been developed through the establishment of a Student Welfare Team, professional development of staff and consistent behaviour management of students.  Emphasis has been placed on the development of student welfare programs to enhance leadership skills, social skills and resilience. The "You Can Do It" program provides the framework for values education. The "Better Buddies" program also features across the school.

Students have been successful in many fields, with representative teams involved in district swimming, athletics and gala sports days. Students have represented the school in both zone and state finals.
